Thank to a close collaboration involving Dario Ferraro and Maura Sassetti from the Quantum Transport and Nanodevices condensed matter theory group at DIFI and experimentalists from the Université Paris-Saclay  has been possible to realize and explain for the first time the energy distribution, out-of-equilibrium, of electrons ballistically propagating along Quantum Hall edge channels.

Specifically, electronic wave-packets of Lorentzian profile in energy are injected into edge channels of a Hall bar in the quantum regime with two filled Landau levels. The resulting non-equilibrium energy distribution is then measured for two different distances with respect to the injection point. Experimentalists observed an exponential decay of the wave-packet amplitude at the short distance (L=480 nm), while for the long distance (L=750 nm) the peak has a revival.

This behavior is common for different set-ups and has been theoretically explained by Dario Ferraro and Maura Sassetti in terms of short-range inter-channel interaction effects together with relevant energy dissipation towards external degrees of freedom, further confirmed by additional measurements of the heat current flowing along the system.

The result has important implications in the field of Electron Quantum Optics and in the realization of Flying Qubits.

Behaviour of the wave-packet amplitude as a function of the injection energy for L=480 nm and L=750 nm. Inter-channel interaction and dissipation need to be taken into account in order to properly explain the experimental data.
