Bio

Born in Genoa (Italy) on June 27th 1956. Master in physics at the University of Genoa on Dec 1981. PhD studies at the Forschungsanlage Juelich (Germany) as DAAD Stipendiat. Doctor Rerum Naturalium awarded by the Technische Hochschule of Aachen (Germany) in June 1985. Since March 1984 he works at the Department of Physics of the University of Genoa (Italy), since November 2001 as Full Professor of Condensed Matter Physics. His research work is in experimental surface physics and nanoscience with emphasis on gas surface interaction, simple chemical reactions and catalysis, surface plasmons and ultrathin films. The research work has been performed in collaboration with CNR-IMEM. Since 2001 he has been responsible for the Erasmus student exchange programme for physics of the University of Genoa and later for the School of Science. Since 2008 he leads the Erasmus Mundus International Master Serp Chem, later SERP+ (www.master-serp.eu) in Material Science and the International Summer School on Science Management (www.sosmse.eu). From 2002 to 2005 he has been Deputy Director of the Department of Physics of the University of Genoa. He chaired the conferences Vibrations at Surfaces 6 in 1993, European Conference on Surface Science 26 in 2009, International conference on solid films and surfaces 16 in 2012 and International Conference on Applied Surface Science 3 in 2019. He has been member of the advisory boards of the major conferences in his field. He has published about 195 papers in international scientific journals, (about 35 with impact factor larger than 8, one of which in Nature). He has been editor in chief of the Springer Handbook of Surface Science. His current Hindex is 36 (according to ISI and Scopus). His scientific results were presented in some 40 invited talks at international conferences and some 70 invited seminars at universities and research laboratories. He is editor of Applied Surface Science and Springer Series in Surface Science and has been editor of Surface Science Reports. He is vice chair of the Surface Science Division of IUVSTA and member of the scientific board of the Union of Scientists for Disarmament.
