Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Physics of the University of Genoa.
The Department of Physics (DIFI), in addition to offering a thorough and flexible university education, attentive to the latest developments in scientific research and technology, hosts and promotes research activities in various areas of Physics considering experimental and theoretical aspects, both fundamental and applied. These activities are conducted in collaboration with Italian and foreign research institutions and centers with the support of national and international funding.
The Genoa section of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is based within the Department, and there are seconded personnel from institutes of the National Research Council (CNR-SPIN and CNR-IMEM) and the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF).
Strategic Vision
DIFI, in its strategic vision, intends to be, for Genoa and Liguria, a place and promoter of research excellence in basic and applied physics, of teaching for the training of younger generations in research and the world of work, of the promotion and dissemination of scientific culture, and of the transfer to industry and civil society of scientific advances. DIFI considers it essential to maintain and develop a systematic and organized collaboration with researchers and institutions at the Italian and international level, as indicated by the participation of DIFI researchers in many international projects, also through multidisciplinary approaches and thanks to the synergy with research entities such as INFN, CNR, INAF and IIT. Identical predisposition emerges from the analysis of scientific production, highlighting as one of DIFI's greatest strengths the ability to produce high quality scientific works. The vision of DIFI, with its own peculiarities, is inspired by and fully conforms to the University Strategic Plan 2025-2027.
Bachelor and Master programs
As researchers and teachers we are committed to the training of the future generations of physicists. We offer two bachelor programs in Physics and in Material Science (“Laurea”), and a Master Program in Physics (“Laurea Magistrale”). We offer as well a PhD program in Physics (“Dottorato di Ricerca”).
After graduation, at work!
Almost all graduate students in Physics at DIFI find a job shortly after their Master degree. Our courses pave the way to many different careers, such as teaching, industry, scientific research, and many professions. We guide our students in choosing their future career, also by means of internship programs in industry before and after graduation.
Scientific research
Teachers and researchers of our Department work at the frontiers of knowledge. Our main research fields are particle and astroparticle physics, condensed matter physics and nanotechnology, biophysics, nanomedicine, and environmental physics.
