In this talk, I will discuss recent developments in understanding the higher-form global symmetry.

In particular, I will discuss the existence of 1-form global symmetry in electromagnetism in 3+1 dimensions and theory of elasticity in 2+1 dimensions. This allows one to systematically construct low energy effective theories of fluid coupled to dynamical electromagnetic field (magnetohydrodynamics) and to elastic medium (hydrodynamics with spontaneous broken translational symmetry).

If time allows, I will also be discussing various interesting limits of the effective theory of higher-form symmetries, central extension of the group involving 0-form and 1-form symmetries as well as physical consequences.
